Saying Goodbye To 2021 from Thistle and Thicket Studio

The holidays are always rushed and I never seem to have time to do everything I want to do. This year was no different. I didn't have time to do as much decorating as I wanted to or as much baking (although the hubby and I don't need the extra calories) or as much holiday crafting. One thing that was not on my list this year was buying Christmas presents as we decided to opt for a family vacation the week of Thanksgiving in lieu of gifts (except for the grandkids). Because our kids spent their Thanksgiving with ...

Getting My DIY On With Homemade Burn Gel from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Charcuterie Board Designed & Made By Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com
For Thanksgiving this year, I joined the charcuterie craze and made my first charcuterie for our evening meal following the big Thanksgiving dinner at lunch. Of course, I had to make my own charcuterie boards and they turned out so well that I had to make one for my women's gift for our Christmas gift exchange. And since we can't all be together at Christmas, we had our gift exchange during our family Thanksgiving vacation so I can share my DIY gift early!

Hello Sweet Cheeks! from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Hello Sweet Cheeks Sign by Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com

Just popping on to share my latest crafting quicky. I made this bathroom sign today to hang in the downstairs bathroom that I am updating. So far I've chalk painted (gray) and waxed the vanity and hung a couple of floating shelves above the toilet. This sign will hang with the shelves. The new fixtures will be chrome, the walls a light gray, the vanity a darker gray. I'm currently waiting on the gray and white quartz countertop and then I am going to install white shiplap on the ceiling and on the wall above the vanity. To ...

Welcoming Fall from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Whoa!!! Where did summer go?! I have no idea but I know I am ready for fall! How about you?

I've really neglected my blog this summer and I promise to do better as my attention turns indoors. Hoping that means I'll be spending more time in my sanctuary - aka, my sewing room. When that happens, I hope to have more quilting and crafting inspiration to share here, but until then I'll share some of my summer in photos.....

Exploding Valentine Boxes from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Exploding Valentine Boxes by Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I spent the last couple of days making Valentines for my grandsons. Not just any ol' valentine will do for my grands so I thought I'd try my hand at making exploding Valentine boxes.

No they don't really explode, rather when the lid is removed the sides of the boxes fall out to reveal another box inside. Removing the next box lid will result in the same 'explosion' revealing yet another box. The third box in my exploding boxes do not 'explode' but rather holds a little gift.

Cheers to 80 Years from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Yesterday we celebrated my mom's 80th birthday. Not how we had hoped to celebrate, but we marked the occasion in a low-key Covid-era way. Typically, my mom hosts a quilting retreat for her sisters and me over her birthday weekend. Over the years, the number of days has increased and its always a fun time. Because of Covid, she didn't feel comfortable having her sisters travel and stay with her so just mom and I spent the weekend sewing. We had fun and we both made lots of progress on our 2020 stash buster quilts.

Conversation Heart Wood & Tin Valentines from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Conversation Hearts By Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com

I picked up these wood and tin hearts at Hobby Lobby the other day to do a quick vinyl project with my Silhouette Cameo 4 that I received as a Christmas gift from my kids. I wanted to make some conversation hearts to add to my Valentines table scape (it was looking a little bare after putting away the Christmas decorations!).

I love this unconventional blue and white color scheme for my Valentines table this year. I added a pop of green with some of my jadeite dishes.

A Pincushion Exchange from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Last night our quilt guild celebrated the holidays with their annual Christmas carry-in meal and gift exchange, all socially distanced. Members were encouraged to gift a handmade pincushion and had three months to craft their gift.

Christmas Tree Pincushion Made From Vintage Fabrics By Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com

I decided I wanted to make a pincushion from some of my vintage fabric stash and finally landed upon the idea of a Christmas tree pincushion. I chose some 30's fabric scraps that had either red or green in them. I used a muslin foundation topped with a piece of fusible batting. I then did a stitch and flip method of foundation piecing ...

A New Hobby from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Our family celebrated both Christmas and Thanksgiving over the week of Thanksgiving. That means my Christmas tree looks pretty lonely with no Christmas presents under it this year. But it also means I get to play with my Christmas presents earlier this year! My kids gifted me a Silhouette Cameo 4 and I thought I'd share my first project!

Jello Mold Pumpkins from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Jello Mold Pumpkins by Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com
What??? OMG, I knew I hadn't posted in awhile, but a whole month?! You know there's some serious stuff happening in my sewing studio when I haven't posted for a month. Unfortunately, I've been doing some secret sewing and designing and can't share any of it right know. So I decided to pop in and share a little crafty project I made this morning, these vintage Jello Mold Pumpkins! They took no time at all - especially since I sent the hubby out to the workshop to drill the holes for me!

A Sliding Screen Door For My Sewing Studio from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Sliding Quilted Screen Door by Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com

Finally! I've had this project in my head for a couple of years and I finally can check it off my to-do list! I love the whole farmhouse sliding barn door look and wanted a similar door for the entrance into my studio (aka sewing room). I originally wanted a vintage screen door with chippy green paint but I couldn't find a door that I liked in a reasonable price range. So I eventually settled for a new screen door. And now that the project is finished, I'm glad that I did!

A Miscellany of Making from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Spring (and some days, maybe summer) has definitely arrived on the farm. That means there's a miscellany of projects I've been working on. So today, I'm just going to share a miscellany of photos to share what I've been up to!

Container Vegetable Garden at Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com
First off, I've been working in the yard the last few days. I've got lots still to do (like dig up all the weeds and grass that has cropped up in the rocked areas of my garden) but I'm excited with this new addition - my water trough container vegetable garden! My hubby ...

Norm The Gnome from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Now that Christmas Day is over, I can share one of the gifts I made for my sister-in-law. She loves gnomes - or at least I hope she does as she received several for Christmas this year! - so I decided to make a burlap table topper appliqued with a gnome. Similar to my Stan The Snowman table topper I shared on the blog a couple of weeks ago, this is Norm The Gnome.

I used another ruffled burlap circle that I picked up at Michaels and backed it with a circle of fabric and stabilizer. I think he turned out cute ...

Christmas Crafting: A Vintage Ornament Wreath from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Vintage Ornament Wreath by Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com
I had the crafting itch this weekend and decided to make another vintage ornament wreath for the holidays using some of the ornaments I found while hitting up estate sales in Texas this fall. This is my second vintage ornament wreath I've made, the first one I made a few years ago and shared my process on the blog here.

Quilter's Emergency Kit Pillow Box Printable from Thistle and Thicket Studio

Quilter's Emergency Kit Pillow Box Printable by Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com
This weekend is our quilt guild's annual Fall Quilt Retreat and, as President, I wanted to have a little fun treat or gift to leave at each quilter's place. And so, the brainstorming began.

Sewing-Themed Bandages on Thistle Thicket Studio. www.thistlethicketstudio.com
I found this cute box of sewing-themed bandages at a quilt shop on a recent shop hop trip and decided to make a quilter's first aid kit. Of course, every first aid kit needs chocolate, so I decided to include some chocolate kisses because, as a kid, a kiss on your 'ouchie' always made it feel better.
